Phuket is
one of the most popular vacation destination
in Asia.
People
come to Phuket from
abroad by flights,
by road travels from
Bangkok
or elsewhere in
Thailand. Doing bus travel
from Bangkok to
Phuket or vice versa
is popular and
cheap.
There is also bus
travel between
Phuket and
Malaysia,
Kuala Lumpur
and
Penang.
It needs to change
the bus at Hat Yai.
From Hat Yai into
Malaysia the trip is
done by Malaysian
buses, prices are
more or less similar
as in Thailand.
A one way bus
ticket from Phuket
to Bangkok is Baht 640,-
(2010) for the
regular bus with 32
seats. There
are so called VIP
buses with 24 seats, selling ticket for Baht
940,-.
Bus travel
time from Phuket to
Bangkok is about 12
hours for both.
Buses from Phuket to
Bangkok leave Phuket
or Bangkok bus
terminal almost
every 2-3 hours.
Phuket to Krabi is a ferry
ride via Phi Phi
Islands.
Phuket
has a international
Airport, it is the
second busiest
airport in
Thailand.
Direct international
flights are
available from
Phuket to Malaysia,
means Phuket to
Penang and Kuala
Lumpur.
Phuket to
Singapore and
several other flights
to Phuket from other destinations in Asia
are available, it
depends on the
season.
Direct charter
flights arrive in from
many other
destinations.
Air travel out of
Phuket to other
destination in Thailand
needs a
flight from Phuket
to Bangkok first and
a transfer there.
Only Bangkok Air offer flights
directly from Phuket
to
Samui
and Phuket
to U-Tapao near
Pattaya south east of
Bangkok. |
|
|
|
|
|
This
could
also be
a
interesting
destination
to
proceed
southwards
on a
trip
from
Phuket
to
Cambodia
via
Bangkok
road
travel.
Airfare
for
flights from
Bangkok
to
Phuket
is
relatively
low, around
Baht
2000,-
for one
way, but
it goes
up and
down
every
day, its
like the
night
market
in
Bangkok.
Check
with
Thai
Airways, NOK
Air or
Air
Asia.
The best
prices
and
service
is
offered
by Thai
Airways.
To get a
cheap
flight
ticket
for
Phuket
to
Bangkok
go
directly
to the
airport
and buy
it at
the Thai
Airways
counter.
Ask
particularly
for the
cheapest
ticket
they
usually
offer
below
Baht
2000,-.
Nok Air
and Air
Asia are
almost
always
above
Baht
2000,- .
Bangkok
Air is
almost
always
around
Baht
3000,- .
The
reason
to buy a
Thai
Airways
flight
ticket
is also,
you wont
have
trouble,
with Air
Asia you
will
have
trouble
almost
for
sure,
since
this are
some
amateurs
who try
to play
a game
called
air line
business
and this
cant go
well.
With Air Asia you better read the small text in context of their Bangkok
to Phuket
or vice
versa
airfare. There are all kind of taxes, duties and add on for their Phuket to Bangkok flights. This usually makes their Bangkok to Phuket air fare to double relative to the announced price and the worst are their gigantic delays and they wont reroute your ticket or do any compensation.

A alternative to travel from Bangkok to Phuket by flights is do the trip
by bus, prices, times
and
hours
are
already
mentioned before.
A
interesting
variant
would be
to rent
a car in
Bangkok
and
travel
to Phuket
via Hua Hin, Chumphon, Surat Thani or Ranong by road.
Naturally
you
could do this
travel also out
of
Phuket.
If you
choose
the trip
from
Bangkok
to Phuket
consider
to
travel
both
ways
with the
rented
car. A Phuket to Bangkok video is here.
Starting at
Phuket or Bangkok
and drop the rent

other
destination
is
difficult
and
expensive. |

left and
right of the road. Lush tropical mountain jungle starts a couple of Km behind Chumphon and that's for almost all the way to Ranong and Khao Lak. After Khao Lak is becomes flat again.
About 8 km behind the first intersection to Prachuap Kiri Khan
is a road sign for Myanmar. Its' worth to have a look, the Thai Myanmar border is closed for foreigners, but open for locals, since on the Myanmar side there is no immigration post, only a military outpost.
There is a huge orchid market just in front of the Thai border post. The Myanmar’s come over every day to sell their orchid flowers and other. A beautiful beautiful lake just in front.
The Myanmar’s try to make some money with their exotic orchid plants. If you are a amateur be very careful since about 80% of the orchid plants are infected by fungus.
It's easy to spot the infection just check for yellow leaves or brown spots on the leaves. Don’t touch it since the fungi can be transmitted via hand contact. In any case go and have a hand wash with soap afterwards.
You wont get as closed to rural Myanmar anywhere along the Thai border with Myanmar. Have a look its a great experience and there are no problems of any kind. The landscape somehow reminds to Tuscany in Italy. Stop for a night at Ranong. Ranong is the biggest port of Thailand on the west coast. Mainly used for the Thai fishing fleet in the Andaman Sea and the Indian Ocean. At your journey from Bangkok to Phuket
you could do a trip from
Ranong
to
Kawthaung
in
Myanmar. |

|
|
The whole Khao Sok National Park has almost 800 sqkm and is the largest on the Thai peninsular.
Trekking and hiking can be done in the bamboo jungle. If you are not in very good physical conditions don't start trekking or hiking there, the terrain is very rough, it constantly goes up and down for several kilometers, sometimes even quite steep.
They have a couple of cottages just before the Khao Sok national Park and along the riverside who runs adjacent to the road, one of this cottage resort is particular scenic, its on the riverside a few km behind the first entrance to the park, entrance is at the right side of the road. For more on Khao Sok National Park check here. |

Leaving Phuket on the road over the Sarasin Bridge and doing a right turn after some kilometers in the direction to Phang Nga.
A good 4 lane highway with dangerous curves and bends leads to Phang Nga City. Just before Phang Nga City is a right turn to Phang Nga Bay. This is just behind the Phunga Hotel which is on the right side of the highway. This hotel also could be a good choice if you run into the night. Night travel from Phuket to Bangkok is very dangerous since nobody cares about anything on the road. On top of it many cars or motorbikes drive without lights, others on the wrong side of the road and so on.
The other day I drove from Phuket to Bangkok in the night and counted 9 heavy accidents, with at least 3 dead people, that means every 100 km one |

Phang Nga |
| terrible accident. At the end of the road Phang Nga Bay opens and you arrive at the jetty.Usually several long tail boats are around. One of the long tail boat guys will approach you and offer you a ride. Its about Baht 800,- to 1300,- for a 3 hour ride to see the area. |

James Bond Islands |
That is “James Bond Island”, Ko Panyi and some of the abstract limestone formations plus maybe one of the hongs. A hong is a cave where the top eroded and fell down long time ago. Usually you can wade into the hong, swim or paddle into the opening with a |
|
canoe or kayak. This is a real great experience, its like in the movies and is a highlight on your road travel from Phuket to Bangkok. Some small |
|

Kayaking Phang Nga Bay |
|
beaches are around the limestone islands plus real marvelous panoramas. After coming back to the Phang Nga Bay jetty do a right turn at the intersection and drive towards Phang Nga City. Just before the city turn right again in Surat Thani direction.
Now the Phuket to Bangkok ride is through a green landscape with palm oil and rubber plantations. From time to time a river is crossed, driving through mangrove forest and the limestone hills pop out from the green carpet.
If you come into the night be aware that most petrol stations in Thailand close between 9 -10 pm and open at about 5 am, only at the main through roads like Petkassem Road -that's the name of the main north south highway in Thailand.
|

Mangrove forest and limestone hills |
|
After this time there are only 2 petrol stations open on the whole distance from Phuket to Surat Thani, that's almost 300 km. This 2 petrol stations are both just behind Phang Nga Bay. The next petrol station is only after reaching the main north south highway close to Surat Thani.
At Surat Thani City the sign posts are up for Don Sak, no need to enter Surat Thani town. Don Sak is the small harbor where the ferries for Koh Samui and Ko Phangan are leaving. Look close to drive into the right lane since this is not marked very clear. The ferry reach the coast of Koh Samui after 2 – 3 hours. Actually it needs to go to the east coast, that’s where the “music plays”. There is a circular road at Koh Samui around the whole island. |

Road Accident |
|
|
Just have a look, you will pass coconut plantations, see a waterfall and maybe watch the monkeys climbing the palm tree to twist the coconut until it falls down, monkeys are trained for this. |

Koh Phangan Beach
Ang Thong Islands |
Koh Samui is a nice place but overcrowded and extremely over commercialist.
More on Koh Samui is here, with great pictures and videos.
At Koh Samui maybe stay 2 days and have a look for the islands in the Ang Thong Archipelago. You can also take a ferry to Koh Phangan, check first if the ferry carries cars. The ferry from Don Sak to Koh Phangan carries cars and trucks.
On the road from Surat Thani to Chumphon on your tour from Phuket to Bangkok you could take the ferry at Chumphon for Koh Tao, one of the prime scuba diving destinations in the Gulf of Thailand |
|

Ko Samui beach

Koh Samui Beach |

Thailand Night Road Accident
|
Be aware that some hotels and beach resorts on Koh Tao only give you a room when you also book a dive package, it’s strange but its like that. Behind Chumphon its again the road to Bangkok via Hua Hin. Don’t use the road through Rachaburi to Bangkok since you will end up in a total mess once you arrive in Bangkok. From that direction its very difficult to find the right way.
When you arrive at Bangkok from the south or elsewhere you must try to stay on the inner circular road as long as possible. |

Bangkok Road |
|

Bangkok new Mega BridgeAlways choose a hotel in Bangkok near a entrance to the circular road otherwise you will end up in the Bangkok traffic mess and that’s no fun.
Actually the whole traffic mess is usually created by the people who switch the traffic light since they usually switch red for several minutes for certain direction not considering that the problem is just moved and to bring the jam into motion again its extremely difficult after such a long time. The cars and motorbikes are so messed up into each other, blocking each other etc. that nothing goes anymore quickly.
On top of it many of them switch off the engine because of the long time waiting but about one out in 10 cant get the engine running again, blocking everything and so on. It’s a real disaster area on Bangkok’s road. |
